Product Manager


Fort Worth, TX

This position is responsible for delivering the program value by being the main content authority for the program. They create the vision and work with subject matter experts (SME’s) to understand their needs, define requirements, and guide work through the software development lifecycle. They work to prioritize the program backlog in sequential order (from 1 to n), work with technology services to schedule work for releases using the roadmap, validate customer responses, and provide fast feedback.

Project Description

Improve the safety, availability, reliability and velocity of rolling stock by minimizing derailments and service interruptions using new or re-purposed predictive technologies, augmenting manual inspections, identifying defects in dynamic state while en-route, scheduling inspections / repairs performed after unloading when possible, reducing train delays associated with setouts and proactively identifying “bad actors”.

The Product Manager has the following responsibilities in a scaled agile environment:

  • Find and quantify the underlying business problems as a driver of all activities.
  • Work to constantly understand and communicate as the internal voice of the cross functional groups (i.e Mechanical, Signal, Telecom, Engineering, NOC, Operations etc.…)
  • Work with subject matter experts to develop business cases for epics.
  • Run POC’s and pilot programs to refine rules, logic, algorithms & business processes.
  • Work to align transportation industry initiatives and competition to ensure BNSF remains a leader in condition and predictive based maintenance.
  • They are responsible for the program roadmap, which illustrates, at a high level, how epics are intended to be implemented over time.
  • Continuously develops and communicates the vision to program leadership, cross functional groups, subject matter experts & development teams.
  • Manages the flow of work through the program and into the program backlog by prioritizing the backlog in a sequential order (from 1 to n).
  • Ensure that there are always enough ready features in the backlog.
  • Participate in validation of the proposed solutions.
  • Attend and / or lead the following:
  • Participate in Program Increment Planning (PIP) events to present the vision, which highlights the proposed features of the solution, along with any relevant upcoming milestones.
  • Attend daily stand-up meetings
  • Attend program retrospectives to proactively work towards continuous improvement the program.
  • Help lead value add message during the sprint demos
  • Attend Scrum of Scrum meetings

Assist the Product owner / business analysts in:

  • Maintaining and prioritizing the sprint backlogs
  • Writing and breaking down User Stories
  • Write and estimate User Stories
  • Refine the team’s work capacity
  • Provide transparency to the work and project status

Work with the Release Train Engineer (RTE)/Technology Services leadership to help facilitate:

  • Release Planning Events
  • Scrum of Scrums
  • Program governance
  • System Demos
  • Team status reports
  • Stakeholder management and organizational change management
  • Collaborate with and escalate as required to the business and technology senior managers.
  • Remove any impediments to the team’s progress
  • Create and maintain work visibility (Kanban boards, Agile tools, charts, etc.)
  • Gather and maintain team metrics

Desired Skills and Experience


  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college/university or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience coordinating or serving on multi-team projects, and working in cross-functional teams or environments.
  • Experience in business and solution development, project/program management, and project delivery.
  • Ability to interact effectively with various levels within the organization.
  • Excellent verbal, written communication and presentation skills.
  • Transportation industry experience

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited college/university.
