Location: Tempe, AZ

Coordinates and performs the daily operations work within the health information management systems (HIMS) department including clerical and administrative functions involving confidential health information in accordance with specified regulatory agency requirements, federal and state laws. Facilitates the delivery of high quality customer service to external customers. Responsibilities typically include daily operations work related to processing patient and legal requests, maintaining the integrity of the Enterprise Master Patient Index (EMPI) and involvement in process improvements/quality monitoring functions.

1.  Conducts routine and complex releases of health information in accordance with company policy and all state and federal laws. Maintains knowledge of applicable federal and state regulations and organizational policies related to release of health information and HIPAA.  Assists patients with completion of portal enrollment.

2. Processes legal requests for health information.  Prepares certified copies of health records as requested for legal proceedings.  Determines appropriate payment for each legal request.  Prepares invoices for legal requests.

3. Provides customer service and assistance related to HIMS departmental functions to patients, vendors, physicians, and other departments in person, over the telephone, through email, or by other means.

4. Supports and maintains the integrity of the EMPI database by monitoring, researching and problem solving potential duplicate EMPI numbers.  Merges/consolidates EMPI patient information and accession numbers when duplications occur. Works at a system and departmental level to improve processes and training.  Act as a liaison between Specimen Management and SQL Client Services to identify and report patient demographic issues in order to improve the accuracy and integrity of the patient database. 

5.  May perform a variety of other support functions as assigned by HIMS leadership. Completes special projects as needed for the department.

Must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of business and/or health care health information management practices and principles and have a working knowledge of medical terminology as normally acquired over one (1) year of related work experience in medical records or related health care field.  High School diploma.  Ability to exercise independent judgment, prioritize work, and problem solve. Strong verbal, written communication, leadership and interpersonal skills. Strong technical skills in using office and health care software applications and databases. Knowledgeable of all HIMS department functions and processes.

Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) eligible or equivalent.
